Why Specify 50 mm Monofilament for Cricket

Pace, Bounce and All-Weather Availability

Cricket outfields demand a surface that delivers consistent ball speed, predictable bounce and the ability to play through rain without waterlogging. Every design choice in the Relyir cricket range addresses one of these measurable criteria.

True Ball Pace Across the Outfield

A 50 mm pile with sand and performance infill creates a uniform surface where ground strokes and boundary runs travel at a predictable speed. Fiber density at 10,500 tufts/m² holds that consistency from the first over to the last, in dry and damp conditions alike.

Reliable Bounce for Batsmen and Fielders

The combination of PE monofilament fibers, three-layer backing and optional shock pad produces a controlled ball rebound that closely mirrors well-maintained natural turf — a key factor for clubs and schools transitioning from grass squares.

All-Season Training Capacity

Synthetic cricket outfields drain rapidly after rain, letting clubs resume play far sooner than natural grass. Dense PE monofilament with reinforced backing is engineered to hold blade structure through seasons of matches, net sessions and UV exposure.

Product Range

Systems for match pitches, run-ups and practice nets

Cricket asks contradictory things: a true bounce for the match pitch and brute abrasion resistance for run-ups and net bays. These 15 mm systems serve both.

Performance Design

Translating Natural Turf Behavior to Synthetic

The playing character of a cricket outfield is governed by surface pace and ball bounce. On natural turf, these qualities depend on grass length, soil moisture and rolling schedules — variables that change daily. A synthetic outfield removes most of that variability while preserving the pace characteristics players expect.

Each of the five Relyir blade profiles — diamond, stem, double-stem and two wave variants — distributes ball contact forces differently. Diamond-profile fibers resist compression under the ball’s impact, maintaining pace consistency in high-traffic zones between the wickets. Stem and wave profiles offer a softer touch preferred at some club venues.

For the pitch itself — the central strip where bowling and batting occur — a separate short-pile or woven wicket carpet is typically specified. Relyir’s 50 mm range covers the outfield, while the pitch system is designed to integrate with standard clay stump boxes at both wicket ends.

The three-layer backing — polypropylene, reinforcing mesh cloth, and a second polypropylene layer — anchors every tuft and transfers load across the carpet. An optional PU coating adds moisture resistance for venues in tropical climates or those with heavy dew conditions.

Pad-free systems tend to mimic natural turf bounce most closely. Thick shock pads can slow the pace and reduce bounce realism — a tradeoff worth discussing with your installer before specifying the build-up.

Relyir supplies the outfield turf product, full specification documentation and works with your installer through the project to ensure the pace and bounce characteristics match the club’s requirements.

Factory Direct from Jiangsu

Eight Production Steps Under One Roof

Relyir has manufactured artificial grass in Jiangsu since 2006. Every step — from raw PE pellets to finished rolls — runs on-site, which is how we control quality and hold pricing 30–50% below international equivalents.

All eight production stages are managed in-house, eliminating the quality gaps that arise when compounding, tufting and coating happen in separate facilities. The automated sports turf line, commissioned in 2015, lifted production capacity by 150% and tightened consistency across high-volume orders.

Customization is built into the line: blade density, pile height and fiber colors are adjusted to each project’s specification, with PP + net and PU backing options. The export team has shipped to more than 500 customers across 50+ countries since 2009 and handles all documentation — from commercial invoices to certificates of origin.

Every order is produced to specification — pile height, density, blade shape and color, backing composition and roll dimensions are all configured to your project requirements.

System Build-Up

Four Layers Between Soil and the Boundary Rope

The turf roll is one component of a multi-layer system. We supply the turf and share build-up guidance with every project so installers achieve the pace and drainage characteristics specified at design stage.

1

Stone or Bound Base

Compacted aggregate or asphalt/tarmac base with engineered drainage — the foundation that controls surface regularity and vertical drainage for the entire outfield.

2

Optional Performance Pad

A thin shock pad may be added for player comfort; pad-free installations tend to produce more realistic cricket bounce and faster pace.

3

Sand Stabilizer

Silica sand brushed into the pile to weigh the system and hold fibers upright — typically 15–25 kg/m² for cricket outfield applications.

4

Pitch Integration

The central wicket strip uses a separate short-pile or woven carpet, with clay stump boxes at each end. The 50 mm outfield turf is seamed to the pitch carpet for a seamless transition.

Drainage and Maintenance

Every Relyir cricket outfield turf ships with perforated backing — drainage holes punched during our dedicated perforating step — so water moves through the carpet into the base rather than pooling. This allows play to resume faster after rain than on natural grass squares.

Routine maintenance includes periodic brushing to keep fibers upright, sand-level checks, and moss or algae treatment in shaded or damp climates. UV-stabilized PE fibers resist degradation under prolonged sun exposure.

  • Perforated backing for rapid vertical drainage
  • UV-stabilized PE fibers rated for continuous outdoor exposure
  • Sand infill for system stability and consistent ball pace

Bounce You Can Trust

In cricket, everything hinges on the bounce. A synthetic pitch is judged on how predictably the ball comes onto the bat, and industry studies measure this precisely — the ratio of incoming to outgoing ball speed on quality synthetic pitches sits in a narrow, consistent band. Match-day usability after rain is the second decisive factor: a perforated-backing pitch drains fast, so training and fixtures resume quickly where natural wickets would be closed for days.

Questions

Cricket Turf FAQ

Straight answers to the questions we hear most often from cricket clubs, schools and facility contractors.

Can’t find your answer?

Our technical team responds within 12 hours.

Ask Us Directly
Does the ball bounce naturally on synthetic pitches?

Quality synthetic wickets are engineered to give a consistent, realistic bounce — lower than lush natural turf but uniform across every ball. That consistency is exactly why academies and schools use them for high-volume net sessions.

Can the pitch be used right after rain?

Yes. Water drains through the perforated backing instead of pooling, so the surface is playable shortly after a shower rather than needing a day or more to dry out.

What pile height works best for a cricket outfield?

Cricket outfields typically use 25–50 mm fibers. The 50 mm height in our range offers a balance of ball pace and fiber durability, with sand infill stabilizing the system. Shorter piles (9–13 mm) are reserved for the central pitch strip, which uses a separate woven or tufted carpet.

Should we install a shock pad under the cricket outfield?

Pad-free systems tend to mimic natural turf bounce most closely, which is why many cricket clubs prefer them. A shock pad can improve player comfort but may slow the outfield pace and soften ball bounce. We recommend discussing the tradeoff with your installer based on the level of play intended.

Can Relyir supply turf for both the outfield and the pitch strip?

Our 50 mm monofilament range covers the outfield. The central pitch typically requires a separate short-pile or woven wicket carpet with clay stump boxes. Relyir can coordinate supply of both components and provide specification documentation for the complete system.

How does artificial turf affect cricket ball pace compared to natural grass?

Synthetic outfields deliver more consistent pace regardless of weather, as the fiber and infill system does not soften or slow after rain the way natural grass does. The pace level itself is determined by pile height, sand dressing depth and whether a pad is used — all adjustable at design stage.

What roll sizes are available for cricket projects?

Standard rolls are 4 × 25 m or 2 × 25 m with a maximum width of 5 m. Boundary rope markings and club logos can be tufted directly into the carpet. Blade density, pile height and fiber colors are adjustable to project requirements.

Is a synthetic cricket outfield maintenance-free?

No synthetic outfield is maintenance-free. Plan for regular brushing to keep fibers upright, periodic sand top-up, moss and algae treatment in damp climates, and seam inspections. Relyir provides maintenance guidance with every installation package so the outfield holds its playing characteristics through its service life.

Do you provide free samples before we order?

Yes. Samples are free of charge — you only cover the shipping. Standard swatches are 20 × 20 cm and we typically send three to four models per project so you can compare pile heights and colors side by side. Standard samples ship via DHL or FedEx within 4–6 days; custom-matched samples add 10–15 days of production.

Do you handle shipping and export paperwork?

Yes. Choose between two options: delivered to your destination port, with export customs clearance in China, international ocean freight and cargo insurance included in one all-inclusive cost; or delivered to a Chinese port if you prefer to work with your own freight forwarder. Other delivery arrangements can be accommodated on request.

What is the minimum order size?

Orders range from single rolls for smaller installations to full container loads for large developments. Roll sizes of 2 m, 4 m and 5 m widths (25 m length) cover most layouts, and custom dimensions are produced to order. Volume pricing applies as order size increases.
