Application Solutions
Safety-rated turf for playgrounds and recreational areas. Shock-absorbing, non-toxic, priced at $8–40/m². Factory-direct from Relyir since 2006.
Safety Meets Durability
Playground surfaces face the most demanding combination of requirements in any turf application: they must cushion falls, withstand constant abrasion, resist UV degradation, drain quickly and stay clean — all while being safe for direct skin contact by children.
An optional foam shock pad beneath the turf increases impact absorption around play equipment. The pad thickness is matched to the critical fall height of the equipment — taller structures need thicker pads. This system approach addresses the safety standard that playground specifiers need to meet.
Relyir playground turf uses virgin PE and PP materials — non-toxic, lead-free and manufactured from food-grade-quality plastics. The raw materials comply with NEN EN71-3 safety standards for toys. No recycled content of unknown origin is used in the fiber or backing.
Playgrounds benefit from bright, engaging colors that define activity zones and stimulate children’s imagination. Relyir offers colored turf, custom logos, patterned designs and multi-color installations that turn a play surface into an interactive environment.
Recommended Models
Playground turf selection depends on the play equipment height (determining shock pad requirements), traffic intensity and design goals. Our range covers durable short-pile options for high-wear zones and softer mid-pile options for open play areas.

Playground Surface Design
A playground surface is more than a ground cover — it is a safety system. The critical fall height of play equipment determines the level of impact absorption the surface must provide. A climbing frame with a 2-meter platform requires a different surface specification than a ground-level sandpit.
Relyir addresses this by pairing the turf with an optional foam shock pad. The pad thickness is calculated based on the equipment’s critical fall height, and the turf-p pad combination is tested as a system. For projects requiring compliance with specific playground safety standards, we provide the product specifications and work with your testing laboratory through the verification process.
Beyond safety, the surface needs to handle extreme wear. Children run, slide, crawl and drag equipment across the same high-traffic zones every day. Dense, short-pile models like Mesh Lite (42,000 tufts/m²) and Mesh Delicacy (65,100 tufts/m²) resist abrasion and fiber pull-out in these zones, while mid-pile models serve open play areas where the wear is more distributed.
Color transforms a playground from a flat green surface into an engaging environment. Relyir’s colored turf range allows designers to create game courts, hopscotch patterns, road networks, ocean themes and brand-specific designs directly in the surface — no paint, no stickers, no maintenance.
For schools and municipalities, the investment in synthetic playground turf eliminates the ongoing costs of replacing loose-fill materials (rubber mulch, wood chips, sand) that scatter, compact and require annual top-up. The synthetic surface stays in place, drains after rain and needs only periodic brushing to maintain.
Factory Direct from Jiangsu
Relyir has manufactured artificial grass in Jiangsu since 2006. Playground turf is produced on the same lines as our sports and landscaping products, with the same virgin material standards and quality controls.
All eight production stages are managed in-house. The automated sports turf line, commissioned in 2015, lifted production capacity by 150%. Playground orders — whether for a single backyard swing set or a 2,000 m² school play area — receive the same material quality and production standards.
Custom playground designs — colored zones, logos, game patterns — are integrated at the factory using multi-color tufting and CNC cutting. The export team has shipped to more than 500 customers across 50+ countries since 2009.
Playground Installation
Playground installation follows the same base-preparation principles as other turf applications, with the addition of shock pad placement around equipment fall zones.
Excavate to the required depth and build a compacted aggregate base with drainage. Playground bases need to be especially level to prevent trip hazards at seam points and equipment transitions.
Lay foam shock pad sheets in areas beneath and surrounding play equipment. Pad thickness is matched to the critical fall height of the equipment. The pad is secured to the base with adhesive.
Install turf over the base and shock pad. Seam panels with adhesive and tape. Cut around equipment footings, ensuring clean transitions between the turf and play structures.
Apply sand infill, brush fibers upright, and inspect the entire surface for trip hazards, exposed seams or loose edges. Verify that fall zone padding coverage is complete.
Playground turf maintenance focuses on hygiene and surface integrity. Regular brushing keeps fibers upright and infill distributed. Periodic rinsing removes dirt, food residue and organic matter. Inspect seams and edges quarterly for any lifting that could create trip hazards.
The non-porous synthetic surface does not harbor bacteria the way loose-fill materials can. Unlike rubber mulch or wood chips, there is no material to scatter, ingest or track into buildings.
Yes. Relyir playground turf uses virgin PE and PP materials — non-toxic, lead-free and compliant with NEN EN71-3 safety standards for toys. No recycled content of unknown origin is used. The fibers are soft on skin and the surface drains liquids quickly.
The critical fall height depends on the shock pad thickness and turf specification. By matching pad thickness to your equipment height, the surface system can be designed to meet the fall height requirements of your project. We provide specifications for your testing laboratory to verify.
Playground turf pricing ranges from $8–$40 per square meter depending on model and specifications. While the initial investment is higher than loose-fill materials, synthetic turf eliminates annual top-up, scatter cleanup and replacement costs. Most playground installations recover their cost within 5–7 years.
Yes. We manufacture colored turf in over a dozen colors and can tuft game patterns, logos, hopscotch grids, road networks and custom designs directly into the surface. The design is permanent — not painted — and lasts the full lifespan of the turf.
Synthetic turf absorbs more heat than natural grass in direct sunlight. For playgrounds in hot climates, lighter-colored fibers, shorter pile heights and occasional water spray during peak heat help manage surface temperature. Shade structures over play equipment also reduce heat buildup on the surface below.
