Why Specify a Dual-Zone System

Faster Game, Tighter Margins

Softball’s shorter pitching distance and smaller field dimensions compress reaction times. Ground balls reach infielders faster, outfield coverage areas are tighter, and every surface inconsistency magnifies. Relyir’s two-product system addresses each zone’s distinct ball-response requirement.

True Roll at Shorter Distances

Softball’s 60-foot pitching distance means ground balls travel less turf before reaching a glove. The 50 mm outfield pile, stabilized with sand and rubber infill, keeps ball roll predictable across that shorter but faster trajectory — no dead spots or unexpected hops.

Quick-Transfer Infield Surface

Fastpitch double plays demand rapid ball transfers at second base. The 12 mm short-pile infield turf at 52,500 tufts/m² provides the firm, fast surface fielders need to field cleanly and release quickly under time pressure.

Slide-Resistant Base Paths

Softball sliding — especially in fastpitch — concentrates abrasion at each base. Dense PE monofilament fibers and reinforced three-layer backing resist the fiber pull and infill displacement that repeated head-first and feet-first slides create.

Performance Design

Compressed Distances, Uncompromising Surface

Softball compresses every dimension of the game. The pitching rubber sits 43 feet from the plate in fastpitch — roughly 17 feet closer than baseball’s mound. Base paths are 60 feet, not 90. Outfield fences are closer. The result is a faster game where surface imperfections become more consequential, not less.

A ground ball hit up the middle reaches the shortstop in a fraction of a second. That ball must track true — no hop, no deviation — or the play is lost. The 50 mm outfield turf, stabilized with a sand and rubber infill column, holds fibers upright and provides the consistent ball-roll surface that fast-twitch defense demands.

In the infield, the challenge reverses. Fielders need a surface that plays fast — low bounce, quick response — so they can field cleanly and transfer the ball in one fluid motion. The 12 mm Flat Curly Tenacity, with its dense 52,500 tufts/m² and sand infill, delivers that quick-release behavior at every infield position.

The transition between outfield and infield turf is a critical installation detail. Seams must be flush and secure — any lip between the two pile heights will disrupt ball behavior at the worst possible moment. Relyir supplies both products with compatible backing systems and provides seam guidance for the transition zones.

Many community and school facilities want one supplier for the entire field — outfield, infield, base paths, and warning track. Relyir delivers all zones from a single factory, eliminating color mismatches and lot inconsistencies.

For projects referencing WBSC field guidelines, Relyir provides full specification documentation and coordinates with your installer on zone layout and ball-response targets.

Factory Direct from Jiangsu

Eight Production Steps Under One Roof

Relyir has manufactured artificial grass in Jiangsu since 2006. Every step — from raw PE pellets to finished rolls — runs on-site, which is how we control quality and hold pricing 30–50% below international equivalents.

All eight production stages are managed in-house, eliminating the quality gaps that arise when compounding, tufting and coating happen in separate facilities. The automated sports turf line, commissioned in 2015, lifted production capacity by 150% and tightened consistency across high-volume orders.

Customization is built into the line: blade density, pile height and fiber colors are adjusted to each project’s specification, with PP + net and PU backing options. The export team has shipped to more than 500 customers across 50+ countries since 2009 and handles all documentation — from commercial invoices to certificates of origin.

  • Manufacturing since 2006 — Mr. Wang founded Relyir in Wuxi, Jiangsu.
  • 12,000 m² under one roof — every production stage managed in a single quality-controlled facility.
  • 2015 capacity expansion — automated sports turf equipment increased output 150%.
  • Full export documentation — certificates of origin, commercial invoices, packing lists handled in-house.

System Build-Up

Four Layers Between Soil and Cleats

The turf roll is one component of a four-layer system. We supply both outfield and infield turf and share build-up guidance so installers achieve the ball-response values specified at design stage.

1

Stone Base

Compacted aggregate or asphalt with engineered drainage — the foundation that supports both outfield and infield zones, with separate sub-base preparation where dirt cutouts are planned.

2

Sand Stabilizer

Silica sand brushed into the pile — 20–30 kg/m² in the outfield, adjusted for the short-pile infield to maintain the fast surface response softball fielders need.

3

Performance Infill

SBR, TPE, EPDM or organic (cork) at 8–15 kg/m² in the outfield; infield zones use sand-only infill or minimal rubber for a quicker surface.

4

Shock Pad

Optional elastic layer for projects that double as multi-sport facilities or require additional impact absorption beneath both zones.

Zone Transitions and Sliding Durability

Softball’s compressed field dimensions mean zone transitions are closer together, and every seam sits within a player’s immediate field of play. Flush transitions between the 50 mm outfield and 12 mm infield are essential for ball behavior and player safety.

Base areas and sliding zones require particular attention during maintenance. Regular infill redistribution around bases prevents the bare spots that develop from repeated sliding, and UV-stabilized PE fibers maintain their structural integrity through seasons of play in all climates.

  • Perforated backing for vertical drainage across both zones
  • UV-stabilized PE fibers rated for continuous outdoor use
  • Seam guidance for flush outfield-to-infield transitions

Questions

Softball Turf FAQ

Straight answers to the questions we hear most often from contractors, athletic directors and facility planners working on a softball field project.

Our technical team responds within 12 hours.

Ask Us Directly
How does softball turf differ from baseball turf?

The turf products are the same — both sports use a two-zone system of 50 mm outfield and 12 mm infield. The difference is in field dimensions: softball outfields are shorter, base paths are 60 feet, and the pitching distance is 43 feet in fastpitch. These tighter dimensions make surface consistency even more critical because ball reaction times are compressed.

Can the same field serve both fastpitch and slowpitch?

Yes. Both formats use the same 60-foot base paths. The main difference is pitching distance (43 feet for fastpitch, 50 feet for slowpitch) and fence distances. Line markings for both formats can be tufted into the outfield carpet during production, or removable paint can be applied after installation.

Should we use clay cutouts or full-turf infield?

Both configurations work. Clay cutouts at the pitcher’s circle and bases give a traditional feel preferred at competitive levels. Full-turf infields using clay-colored short-pile turf minimize maintenance and are common at recreational and school facilities. Relyir supplies the turf for either approach.

How do we handle the pitcher’s circle on turf?

The pitcher’s circle can be a clay cutout, a clay-colored turf insert, or the same 12 mm infield turf in a contrasting color. Each option installs with the same backing and seam system. We recommend discussing the approach with your installer to match the competition level and maintenance capacity of your facility.

What roll sizes and customizations are available?

Standard rolls are 4 × 25 m or 2 × 25 m with a maximum width of 5 m. Foul lines, base-path markings and team logos can be tufted into the carpet during production. Custom colors for warning track and infield zones are available on request.

What maintenance does a softball turf field require?

Plan regular brushing in both zones, extra infill redistribution around bases where sliding displaces material, and periodic seam inspections at zone transitions. Relyir provides maintenance guidance with every installation package so the field holds its playing characteristics through its service life.
