Open a turf sample on a warehouse bench and watch where the buyer’s eyes go: straight to the green blades, the colour, the feel under a thumb. Almost nobody asks about the soft brown layer underneath the pile. That layer is artificial grass thatch, one of the most deliberately engineered parts of the roll and one of the least understood.

The reason is simple: natural-lawn thatch is a problem you remove, so buyers assume the same word means the same thing here. It does not. In synthetic turf, thatch is designed in and doing several jobs at once. In a natural lawn the same word describes dead organic matter that builds up, blocks water and air from the roots, and has to be removed. That is where the bad reputation comes from. Artificial grass thatch points the other way: it is a manufactured feature of every artificial turf installation, not an accumulation, and no one ever removes it.

Here is an opinion worth stating plainly: learning to read thatch is learning to read half the turf. Blades are the visible half that sells the sample; thatch is the working half that decides how the roll behaves in year two. Buyers who read both make better calls at the quoting stage.

Where Thatch Sits in the Turf Structure

The order is fixed. Straight face yarn rises through the backing and forms the pile you can see. Thatch fills the base of that pile, sitting between the underside of the visible blades and the top of the primary backing. Nothing else occupies that gap.

The position decides which problems the layer can solve. At the base of the pile, thatch touches the roots of every blade and the backing at once. It is the only component that braces blades from below while letting water pass to the perforations.

Two consequences follow. A thatch layer only supports the turf if it spreads evenly across the whole width; bare patches at the root zone behave like no thatch at all. And colour and density at this height show the moment a sample is brushed backwards.

What Thatch Is Made Of

Most thatch yarn is made from one of three polymers: polypropylene, polyethylene, or nylon, also written as polyamide. All three are extruded plastics, so they cannot rot, feed mould or attract pests the way an organic layer can.

Polypropylene is the workhorse: stiff, inexpensive and good at holding a set curl. Polyethylene is softer and more flexible, the usual face yarn because it feels closer to a real leaf. Nylon brings the best elasticity but costs more, so it appears selectively.

In our own production, a common pairing is a polyethylene monofilament face yarn over a polypropylene thatch. The stiff curl braces the softer blade, and both polymers resist water and UV without coating. It is one sensible option among several.

Because the structure is built layer by layer, yarn type, colour, density and pile height are specified at the design stage. A buyer can order a stiffer thatch for a high-traffic sports surface or a softer, denser one for a residential garden in the same run.

Thatch Colors and Curled Fiber Shapes

Thatch comes in a narrow colour family: tan, brown, yellow and occasionally a muted green, mimicking the dry thatch under a living lawn and deliberately duller than the face yarn. A uniform bright green pile with no contrasting base reads as plastic within a few paces.

Realism comes from contrast. Realistic products blend two or more blade colours with thatch in a different tone, so the surface never resolves into one flat colour. Even a small difference between the brown base and the green pile makes the lawn read as living growth.

The fibre itself is shorter, curlier and more densely packed than the face yarn. Face yarn is drawn long and straight to stand up; thatch is crimped into tight waves that interlock and hold position. Straight fibre at the base would simply mat flat under the blades.

Why a Thatch Layer Exists

Five jobs, and they overlap. A well-built artificial grass thatch layer makes the base of the pile look natural and braces the blades so they stand. It cushions footfall, keeps a drainage path open through the root zone, and hides the dark backing from direct sun.

The order is worth being honest about. In our experience, thatch is a performance component first and a cosmetic one second. The natural look is a side effect of doing the structural work well.

Drainage is the most overlooked function, because it is invisible when it works. The crisscross of curled fibres holds a continuous void space at the base of the pile. Water reaching the root zone then travels sideways to the next perforation instead of sitting where it lands.

How Thatch Keeps Blades Standing and Springy

Standing is a support problem. A long blade is a lever with nothing below its pivot, so it folds over in traffic unless something sits at the base. On an artificial turf installation, sand solves this from above; thatch solves it from below, wedging around each straight yarn and limiting how far it can lean.

The effect is strongest on tall piles. A short residential pile mostly holds itself up, but a taller sports or landscape pile needs real support or it mats within a season. That is why thatch most often appears blended into taller turf rather than short, dense products.

The springiness works through what the trade calls fibre memory: each extruded yarn remembers the shape it was set into and wants to return when bent. Support at the base lets it, because the fibre has something to push against rather than being pinned flat.

Think of a mattress rather than a plank. A blade on its own bends once and stays bent; a blade over a springy base compresses and rebounds repeatedly. Thatch supplies the springs, and infill narrows how far each fibre travels.

One boundary worth marking: thatch decides how well a turf recovers, not how to restore one that has already flattened. Repair is a maintenance subject of its own; this layer is only the mechanical reason recovery happens at all.

Thatch, Infill, and Backing Work Together

There are two routes to holding a long pile upright. The sand-filled route relies on heavy granular infill brushed into the pile; the thatch route relies on the built-in curled layer. Both produce a stable lawn, and neither is automatically better.

They are not exclusive. A turf with thatch can still take a thin top-up sand layer to add stability and extend service life; the sand disappears beneath the frizzy fibres. One manufacturer’s guidance puts that top-up at roughly a third of the sand used in a system with no thatch.

That reduction matters most where weight is the constraint. A balcony, a roof terrace or a semi-temporary artificial turf installation cannot carry a deep sand bed, and a thatch layer removes the heavy filler along with the load.

Underneath, thatch works with the backing rather than against it, spreading load so the perforations keep their drainage path instead of being compressed shut. Backings run to PP+Net and PU, and both pair with a thatch layer.

What Turf Without Thatch Looks Like

A turf with no thatch solves the appearance problem a different way. Manufacturers push blade density up, so the top of the pile is denser and the backing is hidden by grass rather than a brown base. Next to a thatch product, the no-thatch roll looks thinner at the root and fuller at the top.

The trade-off appears under traffic: without support at the base, blades depend on infill to stay upright, so a no-thatch lawn asks for more sand or rubber. Skip the infill and blades splay and flatten earlier than on a thatch-supported turf.

A specification line cannot tell you how dense the thatch layer is at the root or how fast a blade springs back. Your fingers can, in thirty seconds on a sample. How to Judge Thatch Quality in a Sample

Five checks cover the layer, and none of them need a tool beyond your hands and a decent light. Run them on every sample before a specification is written, because a thatch problem is far cheaper to catch on a bench than on a finished artificial turf installation.

First, brush the pile backwards and look at the root. A good artificial grass thatch layer fills the root zone evenly across the full width of the sample, with no bare stripes where the backing shows through. Exposed backing in any band means too little thatch there, and it will behave like a no-thatch product along that line.

Second, run the recovery test. Press the pile flat with a palm, hold a few seconds, and release. Blades should rise back with help from the layer underneath; a hand-shaped patch that stays pressed means weak support at the base. Repeat on a no-thatch sample for comparison.

Third, judge the colour in daylight, not under a shop lamp. The base should read tan or brown and slightly uneven, never one flat tone. Bright green thatch is a warning sign, and matching it against blade colours is faster by eye than by measurement.

Fourth, feel for density and curl. Roll a pinch of the base between finger and thumb: a good layer feels dense and springy, not sparse or loose. The fibres should be visibly crimped or wavy, because curl is what lets them interlock and hold blades without adding weight.

Too Little or Too Much Thatch

Most of the industry says the same thing about this layer: strike the right balance. Almost nobody says what balance looks like on a sample. The three tiers below turn that principle into something a buyer can measure against a roll.

The over-thatched failure is the least intuitive, because more of a good thing sounds safer. A root zone packed solid with curl is a plugged one: slower to drain, firmer underfoot, behaving like a pad instead of a spring bed.

The under-thatched failure is more common in budget products. The roll quotes well because it is lighter, then flattens along every walking line within a couple of seasons and asks for repeated sand top-ups. The saving is real and so is the maintenance.

One more opinion, since it shapes everything above: balance beats maximum. A thatch layer is a tuning decision, not a volume decision, and this trade-off is worth settling on a sample rather than a spec sheet.
