Football Field Dimensions Guide: Standard Soccer Pitch Sizes

Every misplaced line on a new pitch starts as a wrong number on paper. A crew that stakes out from memory can build a field the competition rules reject, and turf ordered to the wrong footprint arrives short. The numbers that matter are few, but every one of them is fixed in writing, and inspectors measure each line.

The ranges below come from the published laws of the game and the field guidance we check before quoting any pitch.

What The Laws Allow For Pitch Size

Law 1 keeps the geometry simple: the field of play is a rectangle, and the touchline must always be longer than the goal line. Inside that rule the written ranges are wide. Touchlines may run 90–120 m and goal lines 45–90 m for domestic matches.

International football narrows the band: touchlines 100–110 m and goal lines 64–75 m. A league fixture can legally sit at the wide end of the domestic range. The same pitch may still fail an international inspection if it stops short of the 64 m width minimum. Football field dimensions therefore depend on which competitions a venue intends to host.

Law 1 also settles the surface. Matches may be played on natural or artificial ground where the competition allows it, and artificial surfaces must be green. Other line colours are permitted on artificial surfaces when they stay clearly distinguishable from the playing lines. Most artificial turf installations use that allowance to carry a second sport’s markings on the same carpet.

Recommended Size For Professional And International Play

The ranges are permissive, yet almost nobody builds at the edges. The recommended senior pitch measures 105 m by 68 m, and most purpose-built stadiums cluster on that rectangle. Football field dimensions converge there because broadcasters, schedulers and turf buyers all standardise around one size.

The dimensions do not stop at the lines. Guidance for international venues asks for at least 2 m of level surface beyond every touchline and goal line. Larger stadiums add 5 m behind each goal line and 4 m beyond each touchline before advertising boards, while smaller venues can work with 4 m and 3 m.

Each warm-up zone behind a goal is planned at 3 m by 30 m. Multiply the playing rectangle and the carpet alone covers 7,140 m² before any run-off. That area is why roll planning matters, and it is where our sports turf systems are quoted: to a stated width, pile and density, not to a guess.

Pitch Markings Every Line And Zone Measured

Markings are where set-out errors live, because every zone has two dimensions and one anchor point. The halfway line divides the field, and a centre circle of 9.15 m radius guards the kick-off.

Each penalty area extends 16.5 m from the goal line and 16.5 m from the inside of each post, which makes it 40.32 m across on a standard goal. The penalty mark sits 11 m out, with the arc drawn 9.15 m from it outside the box.

The goal area is the smaller box: 5.5 m from each post and the goal line, 18.32 m wide in total. Line discipline is written just as tightly. No line may exceed 12 cm, and the goal line must match the posts and crossbar in width. Each corner flies a flag at least 1.5 m high, and defender retreat marks sit 9.15 m back from the corner arc off the field.

Size Rules By Competition Level And Age

Between the law-book extremes and the professional standard sit the levels most buyers actually build for. College fields in the US run 115–120 yd long and 70–75 yd wide. High school fields carry the widest senior tolerance at 100–120 yd by 55–80 yd.

Youth formats shrink by programme rule rather than by Law 1. US small-sided guidance puts 9v9 fields for under-11 and under-12 players at 70–80 yd by 45–55 yd, and 7v7 fields at 55–65 yd by 35–45 yd. Dimension Mistakes On New Pitch Builds

Most failed set-outs trace back to one of four preventable errors. Each one is cheap to avoid on paper and expensive to fix in turf.

Building From Memory Instead Of The Written Range

A remembered pitch is not a specification. The touchline must exceed the goal line, and both must sit inside the written bands for the level being hosted. Print the range, set the corner flags to it, then order carpet to the set-out drawing.

Treating Domestic And International Minimums As One Number

A pitch that sits at the bottom of the domestic band can still fall short of the international touchline minimum. Venues that may host cross-border matches should set out to the international band from day one, because turf and fencing rarely move afterwards.

Anchoring The Penalty Zone From The Wrong Line

The penalty area measures 16.5 m from the goal line and 16.5 m from the inside of each post. Both anchors must be true, or the mark and the arc move with them. Set the goal frame first, then work the box outward from the posts and the line together.

Treating Line Width And Colour As Cosmetic

Lines are dimensioned too: nothing wider than 12 cm, goal line matching the posts, and any extra colour on artificial turf kept clearly distinct. On artificial turf installations the second colour is planned before the carpet is ordered, because inlaid lines are cut into the roll rather than painted over it.

Run Off Space And Adjacent Pitch Clearances

A pitch that measures right can still fail on the space around it. Published buffer guidance sets run-off at 3 m minimum and 6 m clearance between pitches laid side by side. International venue guidance layers more on top: level surface past every line, then the larger advertising-board distances noted earlier.

The run-off should look and play like the field. Player footing must not change across the touchline, so on artificial turf installations the same carpet usually continues past the lines instead of switching material at the boundary. Roll width decides how cleanly that happens, so check the roll widths and construction before fixing a layout.

Multi-field sites plan the 6 m corridor as shared ground, each pitch contributing half. Contrasting line colours keep two adjacent fields readable from one touchline, and warm-up zones stay clear of the corners.

Checklist Before Staking The Pitch Lines

Run this list on paper before anyone drives a stake. Five checks take an hour; a re-stake costs the week.

Fix The Competition Level Before The Footprint

Decide which competitions the venue will host, then take the length and width band for that level. A multi-use ground plans to the strictest band it may ever host.

Set The Goal Line Width First

Width drives everything downstream: penalty-zone width, carpet width, seam count. Lock the goal line measurement, then lay the touchline length against it.

Measure The Penalty Zone From Both Anchors

Work the 16.5 m box from the posts and the goal line together, and check the 11 m mark from the finished goal line, not from the box edge.

Reserve Run-Off Before Anything Else Claims It

Draw the 3 m buffer and the 6 m adjacent-pitch corridor into the site plan first. Fencing, benches and floodlight positions take whatever is left unless the buffer is fenced on paper.

Confirm Colours, Markings And Roll Plan Together

On artificial turf installations the line colours, the second sport’s markings and the roll widths are one decision. Review custom roll widths, pile heights and colours with the manufacturer while the set-out plan is still on screen.
