Where an Artificial Pitch Still Costs More

Honest trade-offs keep the decision clean. Upfront construction cost for an artificial rugby pitch is higher than a grass renovation, and the case rests on what leaves the budget afterwards: watering, mowing, fertiliser and repair.

The base is the second limit. A sub-base that does not drain or hold levels will pull a good carpet down with it. Testing the sub-base before installation is what the sport’s governing body recommends, because remediation under a finished pitch is the costliest work on the site.

Infill is the third limit, and it is a specification choice.
